n.c.1300, “clerk, secretary,” from Old French notarie “scribe, clerk, secretary” (12c.) and directly from Latin notarius “shorthand writer, clerk, secretary,” from notare, “to note,” from nota “shorthand character, letter, note” (see note (v.)).
