gorgas in Science Gorgas [gôr′gəs]William Crawford 1854-1920
- American army surgeon who directed programs to eradicate the Aedes aegypti mosquito in Havana, Cuba (1901), and in the Panama Canal Zone (1904-1906). The mosquito had been shown by Dr. Walter Reed and others to be responsible for the transmission of yellow fever.
